let s get you to chad myers in the severe weather center. and chad, we re following this is the lightning. this is the lightning from last night? dangerous stuff here. you know, i commented to my producers, that we had two states that didn t have some type of lightning go on yesterday. it was an ugly day for thunder and lightning all over the country. it was the heat, humidity and it s going to happen again today. maybe a little of the northeast getting away from it. but when you get this kind of stuff going on, heat and humidity, we re going to pop showers up. technically it s only 11:00, central time because the daylight savings time thing back here towards the northeast, already a severe weather thunderstorm watch box for delaware and washington, d.c. and showers will pop up everywhere across parts of the eastern part of the country. the northern part of the country and even out west. that s going to be the problem. here s the deal. tony, you have to understand how early it is i
90s all day today across parts of upstate new york and also down even in the middle 90s from yonkers down to inglewood and the queens area. this is going to lead to something else. we have our first real significant watch of the day. it is a severe thunderstorm watch box. a strong line approaching the st. louis area. that line could immediately make wind damage. trees could be down, power lines could be down. we have cold fronts and warm fronts banging into each other across parts of the midwest and in these zones where we have the red here, the red across parts of the northeast, also into montana and parts of wyoming as well, they could see severe weather. the most severe is probably right there centered over iowa. some of those could have storms that rotate and when that happens, the rotation can lead to tornadoes on the ground. not typically your july/august
arkansas and oklahoma all over again. it s iowa. look at the powerful storms that brought heavy rain and flash floods. bonnie, are you watching the pictures? look at this. roads turned quickly into rivers. many homes in des moines flooded. there was wind damage, a few tornadoes across the northern part of the state. no injuries, thankfully, record. this is unbelievable. not only that. it was a huge storm, and you mentioned the wind damage. there were over 200 reports of wind damage across the midwest yesterday. what about right now? there is a severe weather threat happening as we speak. i want to show you where it is. it s across pennsylvania and on into new york. a severe thunderstorm watch box is now in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight. we are seeing strong storms in the state college area, but just to let you know, new england, we are anticipating you will see
it s a serious storm. it s moving off to the southeast. so oklahoma city is under that tornado warning right now. we do have a severe thunderstorm watch box up for this area. oklahoma city is included this n that. it goes into missouri that will stay in the balance of the afternoon. we re going to see isolated activity as far as tornados is concerned. if you are around oklahoma city area down through alabama, be on standby. if you see those clouds start to move in with the rain, take shelter because you could have tornado activity with these. we ll keep you posted. gregg: the oil spill in the gulf now threatening the livelihoods of thousands. a fish men there. some have been hired to help put booms in place, but a lot of them are not happy with the wages they are getting. there is a whole process in how it s being handled. evidence an has that story.
