The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture has submitted a report on the functioning of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), emphasizing the need for improved documentation of the nation s cultural heritage. While ASI is mandated to create a database of heritage sites and antiques, the report notes that only 16.8 lakh out of an estimated 58 lakh antiques have been documented.
The Government, the sources added, believes that most of the current monuments are from the British-era despite India having a vast wealth of more ancient structures.
