katherine gork rer stier are st there. i think they d be fooling themselves if they believed that. as jennifer noted, there are a number of crises up ahead t. president sui nikkeily unqualified to confront them and, frankly, what you have seen now with the handling of charlottesville is a president nobody should want to touch. those were his words, those weren t steve bannon s words. you had the new chief of staff, john kelly, a military mane p man, maybe he will establish order, get things under control there. in terms of people looking for his appointment as chief of staff to do that, does today s development with steve bannon say anything in that regard? i think it says john kelly is empowered in the administration downward. the big question everybody raises can he manage up the can he reign in the self-destructed impulses of a president who always has tv, conspiracy theories lodged in his brain and
marketplace is. you ve heard the criticisms of the cbo this morning and that is, well, when we look at the cbo scoring from before during obamacare, those weren t accurate either. how would you respond to those criticisms? well, it turns out that they were mostly accurate but not in the same time frame that was initially known. there was said to be significant growth in the number of people insured and, in fact, 20 million americans do not have insurance as a result of the affordable care act. a little slower an initially, obviously the rollout and it was rough and understandably so with the scope that was attempted at that time. eventually it got in place and in many parts of the country it s working very, very well. but we need to do more. we clearly need to shore up some of the holes. for example, it s just outrageous that the law passed by the republicans back in 2003
tax that he illeglegally has to. questions of large payments from let s say a russian and does that happen but those two little pages doesn t show any of that. so it almost sets the media up to get hysterical about something we don t know about and which then leads me to wonder if this is exactly what they wanted, which is why a client copy was released to the press? i think that is spot on analysis of the situation how we got here. really, the story is in the schedules and in the admissions that go with the tax returns which can number hundreds of pages and we don t have that. what you do have is something that states very clearly that donald trump not only paid taxes, he paeed a lot of taxes that donald trump, those weren t clearly audited but somehow they got out into the public. probably their fingerprints are on it. he wants to set the narrative on the taxes and i think it s because you re not going to see the current taxes. i don t think you re going to get a look what comes ou
it s been incredible to see and largely self-organized. i think the dnc has an opportunity to turbo charge that activism that s happening. we have an enormous opportunity to improve the technologies that exist, to help people do that organizing work. you know, help people schedule those events, turn people out to those town halls, to make their opinions heard. and i also think that the democratic party has an unprecedented opportunity to get more people invested in the party, get more small donors contributing and expand that base. and then the last thing i d say, you talk about these different candidates that we have for chair. we need to recruit candidates to run for every single office in this country. you know, when you look at the 2006 midterm election, we picked up some seats just because people had stepped up and decided to run. those weren t races that people in washington, d.c., or pundits thought were races we could win. who knows what opportunities we re going to have in two
obligation and responsibility to be a public servant, and public servant, you ll notice, is something that jeb bush uses a lot on the road. that he feels like it s his responsibility to sort of do the right thing and serve the country. so clearly this is a grandson who is channeling his grandfather and i think that e dynamic is fascinating for someone for whom his family is, can be a burden on the campaign trail at times. and david gergen, to you, this comes at a time when jeb bush is grappling with declining poll numbers. what does this all mean for jeb bush in this election? i don t think it s going to have a direct rub-off on jeb bush s campaign. i don t think it will revive his campaign. he s going to have to do that on his own. and the comments about rumsfeld and cheney, those weren t meant to change the election campaign. these were conversations that president bush had with john
