Ketchikan emergency officials now say at least five people were infected with COVID-19 and contagious during last month’s indoor wrestling tournament at Ketchikan High School. The event has since been linked to at least a dozen new cases across the region, officials say.
The regional governing body for school sports says Ketchikan High School did not test its wrestlers prior to the Bill Weiss Tournament on April 23 and 24.
That’s despite rules requiring them to do so. Region Five of the Alaska School Activities Association issued a formal warning to the high school last week. The organization also said Ketchikan High School had not enforced a mask requirement at the tournament.
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Region V Executive Committee of the Alaska School Activities Association has warned Ketchikan High School of possible sanctions due to not following Region V policies concerning COVID-19 mitigations at the recent Kayhi wrestling tournament.
A formal letter sent by Region V Executive Committee president Jaime Cabral to Ketchikan High School and to ASAA Executive Director Billy Strickland noted that:
“Due to Ketchikan High School’s actions, Region 5 schools and communities have been subjected to unnecessary health and safety risks related to COVID-19. Petersburg High School’s wrestling team placed fifth at the division two regional tournament in Ketchikan last Friday.
Mt. Edgecumbe, Wrangell, Craig and Sitka took the top four spots in that order at the Southeast tournament. The Vikings’ team of just five wrestlers finished ahead of Haines, Thorne Bay and Metlakatla.
In individual finishes, Jonas Baekkelund took first at 171 pounds and DD Toyomura was first at 103. Other wrestlers from Petersburg are hoping their finishes are strong enough to earn an at-large berth to the state tournament.

Ketchikan residents woke up this weekend to find their homes, cars and roads covered in as many as 20 inches of heavy, wet snow. They weren’t alone: communities across Southeast felt the impact of a late winter storm.
Ketchikan doesn’t often see nearly 2 feet of snow in a day, especially not this late in the year. The storm knocked out power in the early morning hours Saturday.
