That’s as at least three COVID-19 clusters, including one centered on the local high school, are driving case numbers to heights Ketchikan has never seen.

SCHOOL risk levels on Board agenda

The Ketchikan School Board is set to meet on Wednesday evening to hear the latest information from the acting superintendent about the Ketchikan School District s COVID-19 risk level assignments. A COVID-19 outbreak in the community two weeks ago led to a surge in cases last week, many connected to students and staff at Ketchikan High School. The district closed Kayhi to in-person instruction last week, but at the board s direction did not close other secondary schools in the district. At the conclusion of an emergency board meeting last Wednesday, the board directed Acting Superintendent Katie Parrott to set Smart Start coronavirus risk levels for individual schools, rather than using one metric for the entire district.

Ketchikan High School hosted the regional wrestling tournament, an annual event that this year attracted athletes from seven different schools, Anchorage Daily News reported. Officials from the regional school activities association issued a warning to the school last week on accusations of failing to test competitors and enforce mask orders at the event as is required by the region’s mitigation policies. By Thursday, at least 11 students, two staff members and five other residents in the surrounding community tested positive for COVID-19 as part of the school outbreak.
