A total of 1,243 new coronavirus infections and three deaths were reported to the Corrections Department s Covid-19 situation committee on Wednesday, raising the cumulative number of prison cases to 17,138, according to department deputy director-general Weerakit Hanpariphan.
Dr Weerakit, the committee spokesman, said the new infections were reported from 13 prisons.
Of the three fatalities, the first was a 62-year-old male detainee from Chiang Mai Central Prison. He was admitted to Nakornping Hospital on May 11 with symptoms of exhaustion. He died on Tuesday at 12.48pm.

Three anti-government leaders have been moved from Bangkok Remand Prison to Thon Buri Remand Prison, where they are being held in quarantine.
Corrections Department chief Ayut Sinthoppan said on Tuesday that Panupong “Mike’’ Jadnok, Jatupat “Pai Dao Din’’ Boonpattararaksa and Piyarat “Toto’’ Chongthep were transferred to Thon Buri on Monday to ease overcrowding at Bangkok Remand Prison.
Transfer for prison head after portrait fire

The governor of Klongprem Central Prison has been transferred to an inactive post over the torching of a large portrait of His Majesty the King by anti-government protesters outside the prison last Sunday.
Justice permanent secretary Wisit Wisitsora-at signed the order on Thursday, the justice minister s secretary, Thanakrit Jit-areerat, said. Wichai Chotepatiwechakul has been reassigned to the position of inspector-general of the Corrections Department, he said.
The position of prison governor has been assigned to Tawatchai Chaiwat, now deputy director-general of the Corrections Department. Sub Lt Tanakrit said Mr Wichai s sudden transfer was over the fire outside the prison, on Ngam Wong Wan Road, about 3.20am last Sunday.
