not to name names. presidential hopeful rhonda santas but there are people saying kids can handle discussions about race and these kids are living in a discussion about race and racism and they are fine. the intergenerational place of this is very interesting that the kids actually seemed better equipped talk about a lot of this than the grown-ups in their lives. it really comes from the fact that the earlier the parents get hip to this conversation with their makes kids and sort of do the work themselves a less work the kids have to do and i think that the idea that there are districts in this country that are going to teach accurate histories of this country and sort of skipped the painful parts of this country and specifically not credit black folks for what we have done to create this country is so awful that for me the thing i love about this film is that it s sort of subtly but righteously goes that s all nonsense kids can handle these conversations. i think the other
hbo documentary film 1000% me: growing up mixed where kids explore the joys and challenges and general experiences of being mixed race in their own words. i sat down with the films director w. kamau bell to discuss the political moment in which he is bringing this film to life and the always changing experience of being mixed, how being connected to multiple cultures can be a really powerful feeling. the so you approach to this documentary from a place of curiosity about an experience that is not your own but is your children s. what was it you want to understand? i don t identify as a mixed person but i have these mixed race daughters in my own house so we have conversations in our house and we are very proactive about how we talk to them about race and culture. i just wanted to see that on film. i ve never seen kids talk like this. there s something happening

here that i haven t seen before. what surprised you most as a person who doesn t identify as a mixed race about their experience? when i grew up the term was biracial which i don t think makes people claim, i think it was put upon them. or you would say i m half black half white. these kids really, are like, i m not have anything, i m not a fraction of anything. i am black and white, i am white and indigenous and latino, they don t think of it as being part of things, they think of it is being more and more. does that come from whole or external society. i think it s coming from home, this film was set in the bay area, it s home game for me. the parents are aware that there are mixed folks in the world. they are very comfortable sharing culture out there and understanding that you can do, you can be more than one thing at one time. i think it s when these kids get a little older the outside world starts to push in and say pick a side, stop trying to be white. and yet there is
