in the senate office building today. senator hart outside doj. on saturday i think you ll see tens of thousands, if not more, people around the country marching on this issue in d.c. and elsewhere. laura pena and lee gelernt, thank you both. the rachel maddow show starts now. good evening. good evening, chris. thank you, my friend. much appreciated. thank you at home for joining us this hour. we are going to have a live report from annapolis, maryland, in a moment. we are continuing to follow the story of the mass shooting at the newsroom of the capital gazette newspaper company. the basics have been clear since this afternoon. a single shooter apparently not speaking to police about why he did what he did. he is in custody. he used a long gun, shot his way in and murdered five people. wounded several others. we know the police response was
he had a shotgun and he started firing as he came in. the death toll stands at five with two wounded. the noted writer carl hiaasen confirmed tonight his own brother rob, an editor at the paper, is indeed among the dead. the paper is on the first floor of an office building in a annapolis. there were about 170 people in the building at the time. the gunman identified as jarod ramos. age 38. apparently had a grudge against the paper. he lost a defamation suit. investigators say for that reason, this was a targeted attack. he absolutely did what he meant to do what he did today. in addition to the shotgun he brought smoke grenades with him. police tonight are being credited with responding to the scene in 60 seconds. they captured the gunman alive. he was apparently found hiding under a desk. the newspaper is the long time voice of the annapolis community. it is owned by the baltimore sun and importantly, the
warrants against paul manafort. that s search warrants and the fbi affidavits have revealed an additional $10 million loan we hadn t known about previously from a putin-aligned russian oligarch named oleg deripaska to paul manafort. the tax returns for a company owned by paul manafort and his wife reveals a $10 million loan to the company from a, quote, russian lender. a court authorized search of a storage locker in virginia used by manafort revealed documents that show the identity of the russian lender was deripaska. misspelled. elsewhere in this fbi affidavit, quote, redacted, redacted, also told the fbi that deripaska helped fund manafort s ukrainian work in 2005-2006 when it began. deripaska isn t ukranian. he s russian and close to vladimir putin.
investigation our detectives are down there you with him. when do you think we re going to get information on the suspect? we have the information as soon as we confirm this. is this somebody known to you? can you confirm if the suspect did have a connection to the capital gazette ? the only connection i can tell but right now is possibly through social media. i have no other confirmation. > any issues with this guy in the past or other departments? we are still looking into that. i cannot. have you received any comment from any family members? is he a resident of maryland? or he came from outside? no, he s a residents of maryland. when he walked in you said he was walking through looking for people. that s going to be part of the investigation. i can t confirm for you whether or not he knew employees there
the anne arundel county executive. phil mudd, what does it say that they captured this guy as he was hiding underneath a desk at that newspaper? it tells me a lot about what his mental state was going into the operation. if you look at some of the operations we have seen, go back to broward county, we had a similar situation with a youth who had done so little. he thought about it. he was separated from the school. he had a history of violence. he did not appear to have pl planned how to get out. he left with our students. this tells me this individual was not sitting around especially with co-conspirators, figure out not only how do i confront law enforcement but how i do escape? how does anybody think they will get out? he didn t think about this in advance. he is not cooperating. they are talking to him. local authorities, i assume, federal authorities are there. this is a local, state and federal investigation right now.
