very, very coordinated. they were able to get the scene under control, take custody of the shooter quickly. at that point, all the attention shifts to making sure that the victims are being attended to, the families are getting the information that they need. at this stage, that s the first order of business. does it look, congressman, like this newspaper was specifically targeted? i don t think there s any way to know that at this point, wolf. we don t have any sense of the motive of the shooter. i don t want to speculate about that. i think as i said, once the shooter is taken into custody, at that point all attention, all resources ought to shift for the foreseeable future towards making sure the families are getting good information. there s a reunification center that s been set up nearby so families can be reunified,
the parent company there are several printed. they have several papers around the area. these editors, reporters, serve those outlets, covering the state house but also local and regional news. doing it in ways that most of the journalists were not. these are areas not getting lots of news media attention. to evan s point about the openness of the newsroom, certainly the address, the building, headquarters is well-known among readers. the newspaper s address is in the paper. readers knew they could stop by, drop off an advertisement, a letter to the editor, things like that. today, that was exploited by this sick individual. like you said, we don t know if this was a targeted killing. we don t know how many of the five dead are journalists. no matter what, this is one of the deadliest days for journalists in america in many years. we know four bodies were found in the newspaper office today. very scary. i want to read some of the tweets from one of the journalists in the newsroom,
stelter. this is a local community newspaper. it s been around for more than 100 years. the police officers investigating this case are the same officers that the reporters at the newspaper would interview on a regular basis almost every day. we don t know the motive. but it s so worrisome. that s a great and painful point, these reporters interact with the police officers there. they know the authorities. now sadly they are the story today. wolf, i m a maryland native. i m thinking back as a student journalist. a lot of daze you wouys you wou meeting or event, they would be the only journalists there. we have seen cutbacks in state houses across the country. these newspapers in particular weathered those storms and continued reporting despite rounds of layoffs and cutbacks. this newspaper is several within
reunited there. that s where our attention should be right now. do you know, congressman, if the victims, the five people killed, the others who were injured, some of them severely injured, did they all work for the newspaper? i don t know that for sure, wolf. i know that the incident happened in a place where they were employees of the newspaper. as the identity becomes clear of those who were killed and those who were injured, we will have a better sense of that. this is a small town newspaper the capital gazette. it s very close to the community. these reporters know people in the community. they report on the community. they do feature articles. so the ripple affects when these people are targeted in the newsroom, that s going to go out in many different directions. it s going to take obviously this community some time to recover. that s where the emphasis should be. do you know, congressman, if the families the next of kin
enforcement. he was hiding in the building and we found him. do you know where he was hiding? my understanding is that he was found under a desk. he was found underneath a desk with his long gun still on him? my understanding is that the weapon was on the ground and not in his immediate proximity. was he in the newsroom of the newspaper? i m sorry? was he in the newsroom of the capital gazette newspaper? we re not confirming that. he was in the office building which houses the capital gazette newspaper. we have not revealed the identities of the victims. four died in the offices. one was evacuated to university of maryland shock trauma and was treated there but unfortunately despite immense effort the individual did not survive.
