The Stakes: Here’s a lesson in physics, math, and governance, all courtesy of a pesky Glenville bridge. First, the physics: The railroad trestle over Glenridge Road is very low too low for many big trucks to pass under it. It’s been hit about 40 times over the past three years, which doesn’t come out so well for the bridge or the trucks. Or for the town. Dealing with the bridge strikes over the past few years has cost the town about $50,000, plus lost time and resources that could have gone to other local needs. Installing more signage hasn’t worked. Understandably, Glenville officials want the strikes to stop.

Even if it is, however, Americans are not. That’s why President Joe Biden and Congress need to, as the phrase goes, go big on a pandemic package one that provides not just relief, but stimulus. Mr. Biden’s pursuit of bipartisanship is all well and good, but it shouldn’t take precedence over the need for a strong and effective spending plan, especially when Democrats have the power in Congress to move forward.
