A legislative to-do list

Justice for George Floyd

Justice for George Floyd FacebookTwitterEmail infobox head: A nation that had been holding its breath since Derek Chauvin, under color of law, senselessly killed George Floyd in broad daylight on a public street can breathe easier now. A little, at least. This is justice. It’s the personal justice that may give a measure of comfort to Mr. Floyd’s family and friends. And it is justice writ large, the kind that lives up to the noble words carved into halls of justice across America. That the outcome was such a cliffhanger, though, should give us all pause. That a verdict so obvious in the face of such clear evidence was ever in doubt, and feels like an aberration, speaks to how far our system of criminal justice has to go.

Andrew Cuomo’s efforts to manipulate an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against him failed, and that he has authorized Attorney General Letitia James to get to the bottom of the matter. Her first task is to ensure that whoever has a role in this investigation, at any stage, has no entanglements with the governor or anyone close to him (or his accusers, for that matter). The credibility of Ms. James and her office are on the line now, too.

Even if it is, however, Americans are not. That’s why President Joe Biden and Congress need to, as the phrase goes, go big on a pandemic package one that provides not just relief, but stimulus. Mr. Biden’s pursuit of bipartisanship is all well and good, but it shouldn’t take precedence over the need for a strong and effective spending plan, especially when Democrats have the power in Congress to move forward.
