With the addition of 5,013 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Maharashtra s Thane district has gone up to 4,16,381, an official said on Monday. Besides these new cases reported on Sunday, the virus also claimed the lives of 42 people, pushing the death toll in the district to 6,942, he said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in the district is 1.67 per cent, he said. The number of recovered patients and active cases was not provided by the district administration. Thane: 16 COVID-19 hotspots under lockdown
Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases, Thane Municipal Corporation on Tuesday imposed a lockdown at 16 hotspot areas from today till March 31. Activities will be allowed in areas outside hotspots as per relaxation given under Mission Begin Again by the Maharashtra government. Earlier, a lockdown between March 13 and 31 was declared in 11 hotspots in Thane city by the civic administration. The order, issued by Thane Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma, said the decision was taken due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in these areas in the past few days.Â
It said all restrictions that were in place during the nationwide lockdown declared earlier would be in force during this time as well.

On Monday, the civic administration of Thane city has declared that 16 hotspots will go under lockdown till March 31.
As per an order issued by Thane Municipal Commissioner, Vipin Sharma, the decision was taken due to a surge in coronavirus cases over the past few days.
As of Monday morning, the caseload of the Thane district stood at 2,69,845. 6,302 deaths were reported so far.
All the restrictions that were in place during the nationwide lockdown will be enforced during this period.
