A police procedure expert says video of white Hammond police officers subduing a handcuffed Black man shows “one of the most abusive uses of force” he has ever investigated.
Nine police officers have filed a temporary restraining order against the City of Hammond after being summoned to participate in an investigation into the 2017 booking room incident.
Attorney B. Kyle Kershaw, of Baton Rouge, petitioned the 21st Judicial District Court Wednesday to intervene on behalf of Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron and officers Patrick Dean, Denver Golmon, Jennifer Payne, Craig Dunn, Thaddeus Gautier, Chase Zaffuto, Brian McCormick and Thomas Mushinsky.
The officersâ petition argues that the city council voted to refer the booking room video to an independent third party expert for review and a written report, and says the council did not actually vote to authorize the investigation of the incident surrounding the booking room video.
