A year after Vanessa Guillén went missing from Fort Hood, her family and advocates for survivors of military sexual assault are still fighting for progress.
During the press conference, Morales and other legislators highlighted legislation filed in honor of Guillén and efforts to enact accountability reforms that aim to protect soldiers across the country.

The Texas Legislature is considering legislation to memorialize Guillén, including HCR 51 and HB 4162 by Representative Christina Morales, SCR 34 and SB 1185 by Senator Carol Alvarado, and SB 623 by Senator César Blanco.

Dallas City Council Unanimously Approves Renaming of Lamar Street to Botham Jean Blvd

Lancaster, Texas – On January 13th, 2021 the Dallas City Council unanimously voted in approval of the renaming of a part of Lamar Street, to Botham Jean Boulevard. State Representative Carl O. Sherman, Sr. (D-109), along with other Texas Legislators, family members of Botham Jean and concerned citizens voiced their staunch support for the street name change, during the meeting.
Botham Jean, was a 26 year old accountant, who was killed by an off duty police officer, when she entered Jean’s apartment fatally shooting him. His death sparked peaceful protests around the world and his life inspired thousands to demand justice for Botham and to continue his work as an active community member.
A balancing act: Texas Legislators face big challenges with budget in 2021

One of the largest tasks Texas lawmakers will tackle during the 2021 legislative session that begins in January is writing the state budget, which outlines state spending for the next two years.
While the tome-like General Appropriations Act can seem overwhelming and often abstract, the spending and cuts detailed within it can have immediate and highly consequential effects on Texans’ lives. For example, previous cuts have kept children with disabilities from accessing important therapy through the state’s Early Childhood Intervention program. Increasing the base wage for community attendants who care for the elderly and people with disabilities can have a dramatic impact on the daily lives of many Texans.
