Senior Tesla executives including those from its supply chain are planning to come to India on Wednesday and Thursday for meetings with government officials, including those in the Prime Minister s Office, according to sources.
Prashant R Menon, director of Tesla India, did not respond to a specific query on the meetings.
Sources say that the executives are coming to see how they can expand and develop local sourcing of components from India for the Tesla car.
Sources said that Tesla may still ask for some duty concessions but that would be for testing the market for some of its models, which may not have high domestic demand. Opening exclusive showrooms under single brand retail, which requires 30% local sourcing, is also on the agenda.
"Now, we do not know whether they are coming with the same proposal or bringing another proposal," the official said, requesting anonymity. However, the official added that "no duty cut" was being contemplated at present by the Heavy Industries Ministry, which recommends such proposals to its finance counterpart for consideration.
