The good news is the College of New Caledonia is on the way to eliminating its $1.2 million annual budget deficit and making up $1.8 million of government contracts lost as a result of civil service cutbacks. The bad news is it will come at the cost of some programs and services, along with an as-yet undetermined hike in tuition fees.
“With the decisions made today we will be very near our targeted amount of $3 million,” says CNC president Dr. Terry Weninger.
Dr. Weninger likens the college’s formula for deciding where to cut to being similar to the government’s “core review” process. Programs were measured against criteria including student enrollment levels, completion rates, employment rates for graduates and the availability of comparable programs at other institutions.
