marine from union bridge. good evening, i m marybeth marsden. sergeant charles cartwright died on sunday. jeff hager traveled to the high school today where teachers and students alike are mourning their former graduate. reporter: american flags line the entrance of walkersville high school. where charlie cartwright made the decision eight years ago to become a u.s. marine. he enlisted before the terrorist attacks of 9/11. and later served three tours of duty in iraq and two in afghanistan before dying in combat over the weekend. we found out on sunday morning. reporter: one of his former teachers and mentor, susan says his death has taken its toll on students here who never even knew him. and finally in the mornings over the p.a. system in remembrance of charlie. i think that s when the students, they realized what happened and we lost one of our own. reporter: he was training, getting ready for his next deployment to afghanistan. reporter: teacher beth who s son
hear the case. brian? reporter: the pool was boiled down to 60 potential jurors earlier this morning but after a lunch a jury of 12 quickly seated, chosen at random, each side getting four challenges apiece. the jury is nine women and three men. six of the women are african-american, two white and one asian. two of the men are african-american and one is white. six alternates are black. three are women, three men. it took two days to get to this point from a large jury pool of nearly 1,000 citizens. mayor sheila dixon herself said she found the process of jury selection interesting. her attorneys had more to say as they came out of court. we are satisfied with the jury that has been selected. we look forward to a fair trial, and you know the outcome that we re looking for. thank you very much. reporter: tomorrow is an off day for the courts because of the holiday. it will resume at about 8:30 thursday morning with motions and the trial should start around 10:00. reporti
to explain, that could be a lengthy process. brian? reporter: this is day one, to sit through a very large jury pool, a process that could take a few days. mayor sheila dixon walked into courthouse east just before 9:30 this morning. how are you feeling about today? i m good. reporter: saying only she feels good on the first day of her trial. dixon is charged with stealing about $1,500 worth of gift cards meant for the needy and spending them on herself and her family. she will confront seven charges all together ranging from felony theft to misappropriation and misconduct. today was about picking the jury that will make that verdict. potential jurors had to fill out a two-page questionnaire first before going any further. dixon and her attorneys pored over that survey aimed at thinning the large pool throughout the morning. a jury selection judge dennis sweeney says because of the high-profile nature of this case is going to be a challenge. already 21 potential jur
