HARKER HEIGHTS — Local businessman Sam Halabi defeated Stacey L. Wilson in a runoff election Saturday for the Place 5 seat on the Harker Heights City Council.
For two Harker Heights City Council candidates, the wait to find out who won is going to be a little longer.
Sam Halabi and Stacey L. Wilson emerged as the top two vote-getters in Saturdayâs three-way race for the Place 5 seat, but neither finished with more than 50% of the ballots cast.
According to the city charter, a candidate must receive a majority of the votes cast to be declared the winner.
As a result, Halabi and Wilson will have to keep campaigning until a runoff election in a few weeks.
Assistant City Manager Jerry Bark said via email Monday that the City Council will meet May 11 to canvass the votes. At that time, the council will also set a date for the runoff election, including early-voting dates.
Final unofficial totals showed Nash with 820 votes, or 51.7% to 766 votes or 48.3% for Delano.
Votes will be canvassed at a special City Council meeting on Dec. 29.
After her swearing in next month, Nash will become the first African American woman to serve on the Harker Heights City Council.
âAlmost everyone we talked to today said they had come out to support me, Nash said Saturday night after the results were announced.
âMy dad was the last person to vote today â he came out at 6:58. He was so proud of me and my mom would have been so proud of me, too.â
