no this is what you teaching your kids? that doesn t merit suspension should be criminally charged. julie: he should be fired. i don t know if this is a tenure issue or what, but this is somebody who s coaching children, and these kids are learning from bad behavior. it s ridiculous to be able to condone this by saying, oh, he s going to get a couple days off, probably with pay harris: it did not say unpaid leave. i have a specific question for you because you and i, i don t know whether people know this, you and i have worked out some moves on the couch. you ve showed me how things work, like a head this or a head that. so you know a lot about. you get too close to a guy, you ve watched this video. his head goes back a little bit, you know, like a head butt in soccer, in real life, whatever. you look at this as a professional, what do you see? there is no doubt it was an intentional assault. harris: how do you know? the way he hits him sandra: and then he points at the r
the president s new plan to cap monthly payments to 10% of monthly income has been criticized. many think it s only a drop in the bucket. i asked the secretary of education, arne duncan, how we fix the growing student loans crisis. stress this is causing on young people, their families, their parents is huge. as a nation, going to college is the most important thing folks could do to enter the middle class. going to college has never been more important, but sadly, it s never been more expensive. and we have to address the massive cost of going to college. yeah, the president s plan is to help you pay for it, not to help you keep the costs down in the beginning. that s the next start of this whole issue, trying to figure out how to keep the student debt down in the first place. i also asked about the tenure issue, you know, the california court oh, sure. and he agrees, some of these tenure rules are very, very difficult for school boards, but he also thinks teachers should be
the gates foundation from other fantastic schools that are changing kids lives. and so that is my feedback. that is how i am coached. that s how i get better every single day. so i m fine with the state tests to be part of my evaluation because i know that i m putting in the work and my kids are busting it and they re doing really well. i like that. kids are busting it in brooklyn brian. [ applause ] that means good. as long as nobody s getting hurt. well, jenna, i see you have a teacher on the other side. yes. i have linda laboy. she s been teaching for 28 years, which is pretty amazing. [ applause ] she teaches in rhode island fifth grade, math and science, and she wants to speak a little bit to teacher evaluation and teacher tenure. i think the two go together. evaluation will help the tenure issue. i think that we don t support new teachers in general well enough. if we did that we might not have to worry about the tenure
allowing for the outsourcing of jobs. there is also higher productivity that goes with technology. there s higher budget costs. there s a lot of different things happening. when you compare union workers to nonunion workers, it s not a straight comparison. this week a lot of teachers told me they felt like they were being personally attacked. they didn t like to be portrayed as someone who was sucking off the public dime. some teachers were saying i put in all of these hours, i don t just work nine months a year, i work 38 to 40 thousand a year, when you say you want to take away some of my pension or benefits, they don t like to hear that. they say you can t take a teacher and swap it out for an accountant or journalist. that their job is very different. randy, let s talk about the tenure issue, which does seem to be the sore point for a lot of issues when we re talking about teachers unions. the rest of us operate a meritocracy, where we re hired
you re not getting the job done. you want to go down the road to the tenure issue you re going to turn political real quick in the local school district because it is all about the money. because someone s been on a job too long we ve got to get rid of them, bring in the young kid for a much cheaper price enstead of paying somebody $85,000 a year, who has earned it and earned the pension, it s just a heck of a lot easier to bring somebody in at $38,000 a year, ah you know, they ve got better blood, they re fresh taught, you know just out of college, and they re a cheaper cut. they ve got so much enthusiasm and they re willing to work afterwards. you know, this is a culture that is permeating throughout every profession in this country. if we could get it cheaper it s just going to be a hell of a lot better. i don t buy that. and i don t think that american families buy that. and i really think that we do a disservice for not standing up for minorities, and asking them. mr. christie,
