「三井（みい）の晩鐘」で知られる園城寺（三井寺）に近い真宗大谷派の等正寺（とうしょうじ）に、人の頭部のミイラ「源兵衛の生首」が宝物として安置されている。500年以上前からと伝わる。
寺伝などによると、時は室町時代。京の本願寺が比叡山衆徒によって壊された。避難した蓮如（れんにょ）が、三井寺に親鸞（しんらん）の御真影（ごしんねい）を預けた。蓮如は布教の旅に出る。ようやく本願寺が再建されたため、御真影の返還を求めると、「生首二つと引き換える」。三井寺としては返還しないための方便だった。
それを伝え聞いた門徒、堅田（現大津市堅田）の漁師源右衛門が、自分の首を差し出すと言い出した。24歳の息子源兵衛が「ならば私の首を役立ててほしい」。息子の首を三井寺に持参した源右衛門�
