The Telecommunications Engineering Centre (TEC) report has suggested that 3GPP 5G broadcast standards - backed by global chipmakers Qualcomm and Samsung, telecom equipment vendors Nokia and Ericsson as well as Indian telecom operators - have superior ecosystem readiness for direct-to-mobile (D2M) broadcasting compared with the ATSC 3.0 protocols.
Saankhya Labs managing director Parag Naik, who claimed that the report favoured MNCs, called D2M a "uniquely Indian innovation" that "will be India s next UPI".
Direct-to-mobile (D2M) is a broadcasting technology that allows you to receive multimedia content on your phone without an internet connection. It works like FM radio, where signals are transmitted and picked up by a receiver in your device.
Telecommunications Engineering Centre: "An internal TEC committee is finalising the report on D2M. It will also take a call if ATSC 3.0 standards should be adopted into national norms, which will allow the broadcast of TV channels and content to mobile phones, similar to terrestrial broadcasting on TV," an official said. The report is expected to be out in coming weeks, the official added.
TEC is finalising a new draft report on D2M broadcasting and standards. A pilot project will test D2M technology in 19 cities. TV s reach is limited to homes, while there are a large number of smartphone users in the country.
