Suspects in custody for barn burning | News, Sports, Jobs

aharpster@lewistownsentinel.com REEDSVILLE- Mifflin County Regional Police took a fifteen-year-old male juvenile and a nineteen-year-old male into custody late afternoon on Saturday. The nineteen-year-old is identified as Michael R. Kauffman, originally from Mifflintown. According to a media release from Mifflin County Regional Police Department, “Regional Officer Corporal Robert Haines received information referencing two possible suspects in this case. Detective Jessica Aurand and Patrolman Christopher Kaniecki continued the investigation, building a strong case against two suspects. “ The media release states “Kauffman was arraigned on numerous felony counts of arson and related charges by MDJ Kent Smith and lodged in the Mifflin County Prison. The juvenile was turned over to Mifflin County Probation Officers and transported to the youth detention center in Centre County. The juvenile also faces numerous felony counts of arson and related charges.”

aharpster@lewistownsentinel.com REEDSVILLE The early Saturday morning fire that destroyed the “Biden Barn” on Tea Creek Road in Brown Township is “most likely the result of arson,” said Mifflin County Regional Police Department Chief Andre French. French said both MCRPD’s fire investigator and Reedsville Fire Company Chief Daniel Aumiller were suspicious that it may be arson and police are still investigating. “Any investigation being done is running through Mifflin County Regional Police,” Aumiller said. “Reedsville Fire Company is not a part of that investigation besides having on-scene details.” The fire, which was reported just before 1 a.m. Saturday, destroyed the structure known as the “Biden Barn” on Tea Creek Road. Reedsville Fire Company arrived on scene to find the barn already fully engulfed in flames.

Owners of the Biden Barn had a message that read Unity over Division painted on the structure before large flames were noticed coming from the barn on Tea Creek Road in Reedsville around 1 a.m., according to reports. The fire was described as a high risk blaze by the Reedsville Fire Company, which got help from several nearby fire agencies to put out the flames.
