a jury in boston has reached a verdict in the trial of a friend of the boston bombing defend dzhokhar tsarnaev. the verdict? guilty. joining me with all the latest, nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. what more do we know right now? guilty for the 20-year-old friend of dzhokhar tsarnaev. they were friends at dartmouth. fbi officials say after the bombing, tazhayakov and two others went to his apartment and took a backpack back to their apartment and then threw it away. they also said the two, the three when they were arrested by the fbi and questioned were not
people wearing hazmat suits that are conducting that search right now. crime scene technicians. we ll wait to hear more about that and how long that search will be going on, fred. meantime today, i interviewed in a very rare interview, the father of one of the exchange students from kazakhstan who met with his son in this country in jail. his son, you ll recall, is tazhayakov. his son ended that interview with him on friday. he said his son denied any direct role in the bombings, and in fact, he is not charged with that. he is charged with obstructing justice. in other words, he s accused of trying to hide evidence involved in this case.
he said, dad, if we wanted to help him, we would have thrown the laptop out too. but we didn t want to throw anything out. it s just that kadyrbayev got scared and threw the bag out. he took the laptop out and put it on the table. so they didn t want to help him. he said if we wanted to help him, we would have thrown out the laptop too and we would bury the bag in the ground somewhere. reporter: now mr. tazhayakov tells us that if his son did anything wrong, he said it was unintentional. he s very sorry about what happened at the boston marathon bombing. also today, fred, finally we can tell you an update about trying to find a place to bury tamerlan tsarnaev s body. hiss uncle who is now in worcester, massachusetts, at a funeral home is telling us he performed a ritual cleansing of
dorm room and not thrown that away and since given it to the fbi. in kazakhstan administrators at a high school attended by one of the three friends arrested tazhayakov said he was a poor student and excelled for low grades one time and said his father talked to him after his friend dzhokhar was arrested and identified as a bombing suspect. he says his son said, daddy, we didn t know. he s not the kind of guy who would hurt anyone. he was very kind, very chatty. we were shocked. that was pete williams reporting. investigators are still working to determine what role if any tamerlan s wife played in her husband and brother-in-law s steak. according to the new york times authorities have determined the fingerprints and dna found on bomb fragments do not belong to katherine russell but she has stopped cooperating with investigators and they believe more to her story.
