At least six people dead, thousands more forced to evacuate. The Historic Town of lahaina has been practically destroyed. Flames are burning on three different spots. Search and rescue operations are under way. Officials fear hundreds of homes are destroyed. Many people on the island have been left without power or cell service. To the visitors who are watching this and looking for answers, were going to ask for your patience because this is a stressful time. None of us were prepared for this. Local people have lost everything. Theyve lost their house, theyve lost their animals. Its devastating. Reporter in the hawaiian town of lahaina, on the island of maui, the scope of the devastation is becoming clear. I have never seen something ravaged so fast. Reporter dozens, dead so far, and at least 1000 buildings destroyed. Wildfires that started tuesday quickly became an inferno driven by actually high winds. The fires moved so fast, people jumped into the ocean to save themselves. Local officials dont know who or what they will find as they search for the missing. We want to reunite families, want to get people information. Whether they are family members and one shelters, or whether they are among those in the parish. Reporter information is hard to come by. Tens of thousands are without power and phone service. Please, please. People are desperate. Reporter local radio stations are trying to keep people connected. We hear them

There is new video and more stories coming in from the bay area families caught in the middle of the fires in maui. Many of them are still making their way home tonight. It has been very difficult on that island. The governor of hawaii calling it catastrophic and heartbreaking. Governor josh greene says it is likely to be the largest Natural Disaster in the history of hawaii. This is the new video of a vacation spot for many people. Away from the beachfront resorts are the homes and lives of the locals. The popular tourist town has been leveled. When you see the full extent of the destruction it will shock you. It does appear as if a fire went off. All of those buildings will have to be rebuilt. It will have to be rebuilt with its own image and its own values. It will be a while before the rebuilding can begin. The focus right now is on the lives that have been lost. Currently the death toll stands at 53 people but it is expected to rise. Amanda hari spoke to the Council Member about the next steps that he wants to take. Amanda . Antioch city Councilmember Mike barber annika says hes been working and monitoring number of staffing level within the Police Department for the past 4 to 5 months. And now the number of officers has gotten so low. He feels the council needs to intervene. A sideshow in any marina parking lot just about a block from the Police Department left one car in the river. Another damaged a water main and a 3rd crashed into a fire hydrant. City Council Member mike says theres a void in the Police Department. Resulting in incidents like this one im told right now we have approximately e 31 officers including supervisors to cover 7 beat on a 24 7. 365 day year operation. And it is my opinion that that is not enough officers for proper coverage danica used to be a Police Lieutenant who handled scheduling for his department. He says 31 officers is not enough.
