Approximately 800 members of the Maryland National Guard are on duty in Washington to support the 59th presidential inauguration with a Maryland general officer taking a critical role in the effort.
Brig. Gen. Janeen L. Birckhead is responsible for leading the National Guard security efforts for the Capitol and the area around it, including the U.S. Supreme Court and the Library of Congress. Troops under her command come from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
