to get a closer look at the devastation on sanibal island as residents returned home for the first time. it was an emotional romoment fo so many people. reporter: absolutely, pamela. we took this boat ride with a couple of women who brought their home on sanibal island two years ago. it was their dream home, and they had to hire a driver, a captain, because it s the only way to get to the island now, because that causeway was destroyed by hurricane ian. so, it was about an hourlong boat ride and then about a mile walk from the beach to their home, and what we saw along the way was just horrible. and so sad. there were cars that were turn around over. there were buildings collapsed, resorts just destroyed. as we approached their home, they could see the screen around their pool had caved in. then, it took them about an hour to get inside because the hurricane shutters were down, and they re powered by electricity, and there is none. once inside, the upstairs level was dry. t

morning. we re probably still another three to four days left in search and rescue and recovery, so that s a rough time frame that could go in either direction. these are not numbers. this is family members, people didn t just lose their homes. we can rebuild a home. we can get another boat, but when you lose a loved one, there s just no words that can describe how we feel for that family. so we hope and pray those numbers stay as low as possible. more than 430,000 people remain without power across florida, and some in places like fort myers beach and sanibel island could be without power for more than a month. crews are already trying to reconnect the hurricane ravaged barrier islands to the mainland, a temporary gravel bridge to pine island could be done by the end of the week. cnn s boris sanchez is there in lee county. boris, we know that it will take months, if not years to put these communities back together. what s the latest on that path that you know now? re
