Mother-daughter artists design sailboats for 150 Sails Up
Becky and Emma Mitchell of rural Lake Park were among three pairs of multi-generational artists to design sailboats for this year s 150 Sails Up in DL public art project. Mitchell designed two 4-foot sailboats using mosaic glass, for the Becker County Museum and Detroit Lakes Public Library. Her daughter, Emma, designed one of the smaller Retail Sails sculptures, which was purchased by the Mitchell family.

One of Becky s large sailboat designs is on display outside the Becker County Museum at 714 Summit Ave., while Emma s smaller sailboat is on display in the museum lobby. Becky s second large sailboat was created for the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 1000 Washington Ave., and is on display there. (Vicki Gerdes / Tribune)P
Retail Sails offer public a chance to own a piece of Detroit Lakes history
Though the 150 Sails Up in DL public art project has been completed, there are still about a dozen sailboat sculptures available for purchase, either directly at the Detroit Lakes Sesquicentennial website, or via public auction at events scheduled later this year.

These two small sailboats were offered for sale via silent auction at the Sailboat Regatta Party on Friday, April 30. Proceeds from the Sails Up Detroit Lakes sculpture (at left) by Ava Marchus went to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Detroit Lakes. Bids for Spinner Blade Parade (at right) did not meet the reserve price, so the sculpture will be sold as one of the city s Retail Sails, with proceeds to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
