Narrator in 1908, few people outside of texas hill country could tell with any certainty where the Pedernales River was located. But on the banks of that river , in a modest springhouse, a baby was born to sam and rebecca johnson, a baby whose grandfather proudly proclaimed to the countryside, a United States senator was born today, my grandson. The old gentleman was partly right, but he set his sights too low. It is really a great conference, something that really needed to be done in the country. I just said to a couple of people that the best memory is to write it down. And so, this important history, the people on this panel have been writing it down so that it will be preserved, not just for us, but for the next generation and the next generation. One german historian said that history always must be revised. It must always be rewritten, because even we in this generation cannot write the final part of the story. Because new resources are coming up, new interpretations, and consequently we must keep working at the same topics and subtopics until we get it, and until we get it right. Frederick douglas visited tennessee three times before he died in 1895. He came in 1873, 1882, and in 1892, 3 years before he died. He did not come to memphis in 1892 because of the riots. Before that, alone woman could not have a credit card if she was divorced or her husband died. The fair housing act, a landlord could say i do not rent to women. That became illegal. Title ix which finally prohibited sex discrimination in education. It is a lot more than sports. It is women advancement. They were used in service of the confederacy. Now they are union property. He even gave the confederate soldier a receipt. So what is contraband . This spreads incredibly quickly. Through newspapers rub the north. All of a sudden you see minstrel shows of the contraband. It becomes a now, part of common parlance. Is something of a legal trick. Is in in between status. Matter slave nor free. You are a ward of the government. You are a piece of property like smuggled goods but you are a person. Your labor is useful. But whatever the ambiguities of contraband, it definitely is a link to emancipation.
