CHENNAI: It’s normal for new political parties to spring up ahead of elections. But what’s interesting is that people entering politics are picking names of parties that are not new.
For instance, Ra Arjunamurthy, who was earlier chief coordinator of actor Rajinikanth’s to-be-launched party, recently floated a new party - India Makkal Munnetra Katchi. You probably hadn’t heard the name before, but the party was registered in 2019, with its headquarters in Erode.
“It was registered by someone else, and I made myself a part of it, in accordance with the Election Commission’s (EC) norms,” Arjunamurthy said. More than 100 registered parties that haven’t contested elections, have apparently offered their names to newcomers.

While filing his affidavit and nomination papers, Hari Nadar was seen adorning crores worth of gold ornaments around his wrist and in his wrists, fingers.

CHENNAI: Flying Squad and Static Surveillance Teams of Election Commission and Income Tax department have seized about Rs 109.4 crore worth of unaccounted cash, gold, liquor, and other valuables since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into force in the State. “About Rs 43.67 crore cash and valuables including jewels, sarees, and liquor worth nearly Rs 65.78 crore have been seized,” Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo told the reporters here on Monday. As on March 2, the State has 12.91 lakh voters above the age of 80. Among them, more than 80 per cent have opted to cast their votes through postal ballots.
DMK President M K Stalin on Monday declared he had movable assets of a litte over Rs 4.94 crore as part of his nomination papers filed for the April 6 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.His immovable assets of land and residential buildings were valued at Rs 2.24 crore.
