During a visit to Taiwan, USA congressional delegation pledged to act if the island was attacked and promised to address the $19 billion backlog in Taiwan s defense purchases The USA law requires Washington to provide Taiwan with means to defend itself, but it remains unclear if the USA would commit forces in response to an attack from China.
In its latest move to deter Beijing action, Taiwan hosted the unannounced gathering of about 60 parliamentarians from Europe, Asia and Africa, who back sanctions on China for aggression toward the island.
