More than 60% parents said phone ‘distraction’ for daughters; Assam at bottom of list with 3.3%, K’taka tops with 65%
“People say ‘you are very young and shouldn’t be using a phone. Your brother needs the phone’,” said a 17-year-old girl from Jharkhand. Another adolescent girl from Bihar said, “Neighbours scold us for using smartphones and they think it is not at all useful for us.” These voices are from a survey ‘Bridging the digital divide for girls in India’ conducted across 10 states that analyses challenges to digital access to adolescent girls and how it impacts their education. The study was done by NGOs Centre for Catalyzing Change and the Digital Empowerment Foundation.
