On Sunday, January 10th, as an XXL swell peaked at Maverick’s, the initial forerunners from the same storm manifested some 1,500 miles away at Baja Mexico’s legendary big-wave spot: Killers, Todos Santos. Though the nearshore buoys were already slam-dancing well before dawn on Monday, January 11th, the action was slow as a high tide forced a two-hour lull.
By the time the tide bottomed out mid-afternoon, Killers was pumping. The same high pressure system that kept the storm away from Maverick’s also helped ensure a clean arrival here in Mexico for the long-period energy, which wasn’t getting jammed up by any local, short-period swell. Back in the beginning of December, the North Pacific finally raised its head from its summer sleep and roared into the West Coast and Hawaii. And while it started slow, the winter season all at once kicked off with a bang. It was ON, from Oregon to NorCal to Maui and Oahu. And Jaws, on December 2nd, saw the best day of the season so far by far.

The first major nor’easter of the winter had its way with the Northeast today. And all the classic elements were in place for a respectable realtime update: snowfall, raging currents, maxed-out conditions early, and a rare, red Epic rating (for at least one spot) later on. But while the worst of the weather is behind us, the swell is far from done with East Coast and Caribbean surfers. Talk about a grand entrance…
During Tuesday’s historic swell at Maverick’s, relatively unknown Venice Beach teenager Beck Adler scrapped into a towering ledge amidst the morning super session with big-wave heavyweights like Kai Lenny, Peter Mel, and Twiggy. Although he didn’t make the wave, the photo from his dizzying drop was enough to get Adler a spot in our Swell Story originally credited as “unidentified.” But it got us wondering,
who the f ck is this kid?
So, we called him up on Thursday. It turns out, Adler’s been eyeing a wave like this at Mav’s for quite some time and, yes, he’s still sore from the resulting wipeout. Check out our chat below.
