Bangkok, 30 November 2021 – Environmental protectors and entities from Asia were today recognized for their work on prevention of environmental crime at the sixth edition of the Asia Environmental Enforcement Awards, organized virtually by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme, the UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC), INTERPOL, the World Customs Organization and the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The carcasses were of a female elephant and a calf.
According to the local villagers, a herd of elephants had strayed into the village Sunday night. They found two pachyderms lying dead Monday morning and immediately informed the Forest department.
DFO Swayam Mallick and a team reached the spot and recovered the carcasses and sent them for autopsy.
While the cause of the deaths is yet to be ascertained, the Forest department has launched an investigation into the matter. Whether deaths are a result of electrocution, poisoning or natural death will only be known after the post-mortem.

Some local residents initially spotted the carcass. They immediately informed other villagers and the forest department.
While the pachyderm is suspected to be 7 to 8 years old, the cause of the death is yet to be ascertained. The forest officials said the postmortem report will pour more light on the cause of death.
According to the villagers, the tusker was roaming in a herd of 12 elephants in the jungle nearby.
Notably, two elephant carcasses were recovered from Raba village under Kushakala panchayat in Bhuyan Juang Pirh forest range in Keonjhar district Monday morning. The carcasses were of a female elephant and a calf.

Keonjhar: In the wake of reports that 11 iron ore mines in the state will be auctioned in August, large scale tree felling is feared to happen around Gandhalpada iron ore mine. It is estimated that nine lakh sal trees and herbal plants will be cleared.
According to reports, Gandhalpada iron block and Kasia iron and dolomite mines are under Joda mining circle. Over 100 iron, manganese and dolomite mines are operational in the district.
However, many mines are inoperative as they fail to deliver minerals as per allotted quantities. It is alleged that forest and environment of the district have already taken a heavy beating owing to mining and mineral transportation.
