Standing her ground: Mamata Banerjee emerges from the CBI office in Kolkata, May 17
Though it put a brave face on its rejection by the people, the BJP is unlikely to forget its electoral humiliation in West Bengal in a hurry. The saffron camp first escalated the post-poll violence into an issue meriting President’s rule. But when it realised the move reeked of political vendetta, the party pulled out another old weapon in its arsenal the Narada scam.
It began with West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar acceding to the CBI’s (Central Bureau of Investigation) request to prosecute four Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders on May 7. Strangely, the CBI had made the request sometime in January this year. The governor chose to respond to it three days before Mamata’s cabinet, which included two of the accused ministers, was to be sworn in.
KOLKATA: The BJP on Monday lashed out at TMC workers over their agitations across the state, following the arrest of party leaders in the Narada sting case, and said chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her supporters, instead of coming in the way of CBI probe, should opt for a legal remedy.
Banerjee had rushed to the CBI office, shortly after state ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim and TMC MLA Madan Mitra were arrested by the central agency.
Former TMC leader and minister Sovan Chatterjee has also been apprehended in the case.
The CM apparently asked the probe agency to arrest her, too, when asked to leave the office.

The BJP named Suvendu Adhikary as the party’s legislative party leader on Monday, making it clear that he will be the face of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly.
The decision once again exposed the BJP’s lack of confidence in members from its own fold, mainly the Rashtriya Swayasevak Sangh and dependence on politicians poached from other parties.
“Overwhelmed to have been nominated by my party as Leader of Opposition in the Bidhan Sabha. I thank @BJP4India and @BJP4Bengal leadership for reposing their faith in me. Will hold the government accountable and defend the rights and interests of the great People of West Bengal,” tweeted Suvendu after the announcement.
