PORTLAND - Residents will have a chance to learn about the proposed $36.583 million municipal budget for 2021-22 during a virtual public hearing Tuesday evening.
The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held on Zoom.
The proposed budget includes $22.4 million for education and $14.2 million for the general government operating budget.
In presenting the budget, First Selectwoman Susan S. Bransfield said she will take “a more general overview” of the proposed spending for the coming year rather than overwhelm residents with a blizzard of numbers.

Portland hires new tax collector - and a new assistant collector

PORTLAND - The town has a new tax collector.
And a new assistant tax collector.
But it also offered a big “thanks” to retiring tax collector Nancy J. DiGirolamo.
DiGirolamo retired after serving first as the assistant and then the tax collector over the past 14 years.
“Nancy was always very kind, and she made a point of being friendly,” First Selectwoman Susan S. Bransfield said Sunday.
DiGirolamo came to Portland from Wethersfield in October 2006. While she was hired as the assistant and served in that position until July of 2010, she then moved up the position of tax collector.

PORTLAND - When the town decided to hold a vaccine clinic, there was no way to know Mother Nature would rollout a snowstorm on the day the shots were to be given.
But when the storm was inevitable last Monday, library staff members called the 80 people who had signed up to tell them the clinic had been re-scheduled to this past Friday, said Youth & Family Services and Senior Citizens Director Mary Pont.
It worked: Vaccinations were administered to 80 people on Friday.
Now, First Selectwoman Susan S. Bransfield said the town hopes to schedule additional clinics for the 100-plus residents 75 and older who have added their names to the list of those seeking the vaccination.
