1. John and Tyler Won Pipe
It was so weird that for so long, the world’s best surfer couldn’t be called a Pipe Master – but that got rectified this week when John John Florence finally won surfing’s most prestigous and most respected event.
And it was so weird that for so long, there had never been Championship Tour points surfed for by women at the Banzai Pipeline – but that too got rectified this week when the Maui Pro had to be moved there and Tyler Wright overcame Carissa Moore in the final.

Most folks don’t think Teahupoo in December, ’cause it’s traditionally one of the slowest months of the year for South Pacific swell. Of course, 2020 has been bucking tradition for months now, and nothing really surprises us anymore but this kind of good surprise is exactly what locals needed to usher in the holidays. (Plus, the same storm is sending southwest swell to Hawaii and the West Coast over the coming days.)
