Four new teachers will join the Whangamatā Area School staff. Among them is Michael Fleming, owner of Blackies in Whangamatā and a local sporting hero, who s teaching his first year and will be teaching Years 5 and 6.

South Bay Boardriders Club launches first ever virtual competition Jan. 15, 2021 at 6:00 am While in-person surf events remain unfeasible, the South Bay Boardriders Club has come up with a creative solution to share the stoke through a virtual competition. Over the course of January surfers from Santa Monica to Palos Verdes, including members of the Samohi team, will capture their best wave on camera and submit a video to a panel of expert judges. The top three videos in each category will be shared on the South Bay Boardriders website offering eternal surf glory for the winners. There are 10 categories designed to allow surfers of all ages and abilities to participate.

Jet ski boom on coasts increases risk of serious collisions, Water safety group says

Dominico Zapata/Stuff Jet ski safety expert Mark Haimona: “You are going to see jet skis running over surfers and jet skis running over other jet skis”. Haimona, along with Jordan Waiti, recently held a workshop for young surfers between the ages of 15 and 17, all from Raglan s Surf Academy at Raglan Area School. Jet skis are being increasingly used by surfers to access challenging breaks, Haimona said. “In Raglan, the locals are saying I don’t want to surf the points because everyone s there, I want to go and surf Mussel Rock. “I turn up there and my God, there s 10 other skis.”
