avenue and the building we re in, rockefeller tower, would fall. there would be extra restrictions in that area around trump tower where this helicopter would be. supposedly he shouldn t have even been flying in that area. now, if he had an emergency and he was just looking for a place to put the helicopter down all bets are off. you know, at that point you re just looking for a place to put it. this particular building, you know, like most buildings would have had air-conditioning equipment on the roof, so it s not necessarily a flat surface. plus given the weather conditions he would not have been able to see what was going on. now, the new york city fire department trains with the port authority police at our aircraft rescue fire center where they get training and respond to aircraft emergencies, and also have their own training programs at the new york city s fire
data, radar foot precipitate and possibly some communication. if the pilot declared an emergency someone would have that information. right, exactly. and i don t know who was tracking the flight. we just don t know at this point. and i can t as everybody has said and you particularly, it s very unusual for a helicopter to be flying that low in the middle of manhattan. it just doesn t happen. there s flights up and down the river. there s flights, whether it s search and rescue or coast guard or other kinds of assigned and approved operations. so we don t know what his mission was and why he was where he was at that particular time. catherine, thank you for your contribution to this as we continue to cover this. let s go to ron allen who s at the scene of the crash for us in new york city. you have spoken to some people who saw what happened or who were there when it happened? reporter: yes, a number of
of this coverage, what you think is going on here? well, it s hard to say exactly what s going on. but i can certainly tell you the thoughts going through my head and going through some of the pilots we have here. the first question that pops up, and tom referenced this a little bit earlier and everyone who s been talking about this at one time or other has been referencing the weather. to be flying really anywhere when the dreelings are down to 400 feet, you ve got a mile and a half visibility, you really shouldn t be doing that. there are occasions where it does happen. but if it s happening over farmland in western pennsylvania, flat farmland with no obstructions that s one thing. but over midtown manhattan it s kind of a crazy thing to think about. but typically speaking you would not be especially over midtown manhattan over those conditions.
