The Tiruppur District Police on Friday arrested a woman and her relative on charges of burning her husband alive inside a car near Perumanallur.
According to police, Rangaraj (62), a powerloom owner from Perundurai in Erode district, was discharged from a private hospital in Coimbatore on Thursday. He suffered an accident on March 15 and was unable to walk. His wife Jothimani (55) and relative Raja (41) put him in the car and the three headed for Perundurai on Thursday evening.

The district administration, Coimbatore Corporation and various Central, State and private establishments celebrated the 72nd Republic Day here on Tuesday with patriotic fervour and minus the fanfare as part of COVID-19 safety protocol.

The tamers participating in the Alagumalai jallikattu on January 31 must undergo COVID-19 test 72 hours before the day of the event as only those who test negative will be allowed to participate, said District Collector K. Vijayakarthikeyan on Friday.
He chaired a coordination committee meeting in the presence of Superintendent of Police Disha Mittal at the Collectorate. In a press release, Mr. Vijayakarthikeyan said that personal distancing norms must be ensured at the galleries and other locations where the spectators tend to crowd to watch the sport.
Apart from the tamers, all officials involved in the event as well as its organisers must submit COVID-19 negative certificate. The number of tamers must not exceed 300 and they must be registered a week prior to the event. Similarly, the bulls and its owners must also register a week before jallikattu.

Madras High Court Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi, who virtually inaugurated the Combined Court Building in Tiruppur on Saturday, said the Madras High Court has requested the State government to increase the budgetary allocation of court libraries to ₹1.5 crore, to ensure that they are well-equipped, across the State.
