The Fall River School Committee criticized Superintendent Matthew Malone for unprofessional behavior on the job but commended his handling of the pandemic during his annual performance evaluation on Monday night.
“Moving forward, Dr. Malone must be a better leader, a better communicator and more mindful of his language, his conduct and his demeanor with the entire Fall River Public School community,” committee member Mimi Larrivee, who led the evaluation subcommittee, said as she read from the report.
The superintendent evaluation rubric comes from the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and gauges performance in areas including professional goals, student achievement, district improvement and adherence to standards around management, leadership and professional culture.
FALL RIVER Most students at B.M.C. Durfee High School will return to hybrid classes before the end of March, the district announced this week.
On Tuesday, March 2, Superintendent Matthew Malone said in a letter to school families that the first of two cohorts meant to alternate weeks of in-person learning with remote classes will return to Durfee’s school building on March 15, with the second cohort returning on March 22.
The high school has been in fully remote learning except for the highest needs students since December, when the district paused most in-person learning as the city’s COVID-19 case numbers climbed. Elementary students returned to their typical hybrid classes in mid-February, while the district’s middle school students joined them on March 1.
FALL RIVER The Fall River School Committee declined a request for public records regarding notices related to pending litigation that may be associated with allegations that Superintendent Matthew Malone harrassed members of the school department staff.
In response to those complaints the School Committee voted to amend his contract, docking him a month s pay. The amended contract also give the School Committee the ability to fire Malone without cause and refer him to a medical professional.
The School Committee’s response of refusal came in a letter by email on Wednesday after The Herald News filed the information request. By law, any potential litigant must provide notice to a municipality of intent to file a lawsuit.
