While children who catch COVID-19 aren’t getting sicker than before, as cases surge this winter, children are making up a larger share of COVID-19 cases than ever, impacting hospital pediatric departments as well as schools.
More than 700 Nazareth Area School District students were absent on Monday, with more than 350 confirmed by the district to have missed school for COVID-19 related reasons.

The Nazareth teachers union said Thursday night it has withdrawn a letter to the school district, interpreted by the superintendent as a threat to move to full remote instruction.
In a statement, the Nazareth Area Education Association now says it’s sent a new letter to Nazareth Area schools Superintendent Dennis Riker and the school board.
“In the letter, we accepted Dr. Riker’s offer to join in collaborative discussions with the Board of Directors and himself,” the statement reads. “Therefore, in good faith, we have withdrawn the letter sent by Attorney Paul Blunt on January 29th, and intend to continue with the educational models currently in place.”
