Subscriber only Motorists and holiday-makers have been urged to take care and be patient as Christmas traffic causes road blocks and bus delays across the Coast. Highway traffic was forced to a standstill at midday on Sunday after a broken down vehicle limited northbound motorists to one lane. The Department of Transport and Main Roads website advised motorists would expect recurring congestion on the Sunshine Motorway from Sippy Downs to Palmview and after Kawana Way.
Ms Ritchie said traditionally Christmas Day was also busy between Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, with delays expected between 10am and 1pm. The best advice is to leave early in the morning, or after lunch to beat the traffic no matter what day you re travelling, she said. Ms Ritchie said sadly road crashes during the Christmas season were around 20 per cent more likely to result in death or serious injury. When you get behind the wheel, maintain a safe following distance, make sure you ve had enough rest, don t drink and drive, avoid distractions, wear your seat belt and don t speed.

Maroochydore Police Station Sergeant Melinda Pyke condemned the behaviour and said officers were investigating. Having seen the photos, it was a significant smash, obviously a large rock or brick, Sgt Pyke said. It s very dangerous behaviour and it won t be tolerated. Sgt Pyke said the Main Rd overpass did not have CCTV cameras and that police did not yet know of any witnesses. She said the most recent incident of a like nature was at Maroochydore in November where a group of juveniles threw rocks at a jet ski causing it to crash.
