oh, no. also ahead, the latest from the war in ukraine where both sides are preparing for the next major battle among fears of a false-flag attack that could end up flooding 80 towns. plus, hospitals across the country have reported a surge in cases of a virus that s making infants severely ill. it s not covid, but covid has a big role in why the kids are getting so sick. we ll explain that just ahead. willie, our top story this morning. we begin in washington where moments ago former trump adviser steve bannon arrived in a d.c. courthouse to hear his sentencing for contempt of congress after he refused to comply with a subpoena from the house select committee investigating january 6th. the justice department has asked the judge to sentence him to six months in prison and to fine him $200,000. bannon s lawyers argue he should get only probation. they also have asked bannon be allowed to remain free until his lawyers are able to appeal the sentence. nbc news justice an
request privacy at this time. my god. both prominent figures in the news. we do not know the motivation for this attack. we know nothing about the assailant just yet. this all just happened in the last few minutes. we re grateful that mr. pelosi seems, per the statement, like he s going to make a recovery. but certainly a terrible tragedy. we ll try to figure out more about the assailant and what caused this attack. mika, we don t have a motive. we ll be very cautious about that right now. but there is a suspect in custody so we ll learn that very quickly, it would seem, whether this was an act of street crime, a burglary or break-in or something worse remains to be seen. but, again, speaker pelosi s husband, paul pelosi, was beat on the point he had to be taken to the hospital. oh, my god. he is going to make a recovery. speaker pelosi was not there. this all taking place inside their home in san francisco. and obviously no connection we don t know what the mo
regimes get started. they get started by a demagogue, an authoritarian basically demanding fealty, and not just to himself but to his version of reality. we saw that start on the afternoon of the inauguration where, you know, alternative facts about the size of the crowd became the argument the white house was making to overlook the fact that there wasn t that big a crowd, and it continues to today where people who you would think not only know better but would want to do better are siding with this outrageous and i believe probably illegal use of classified material. so it s a mystery to me, but it is a dangerous mystery that you have the republican party still enabling the fantasies and the power-rungry dreams of the former president. that was former secretary of state and former presidential candidate hillary clinton speaking with us last hour on morning joe about the case against donald trump and the hypocrisy of how republicans reacted to her emails versus his allege
