The Supreme Court January 21 sought responses from the Centre, Amazon Prime Video and Excel Entertainment Pvt Ltd on a plea which has alleged that web series Mirzapur has completely tarnished the historical and cultural image of the place by showing it as a city of goons. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde issued notices on the plea which alleged that showing shameless things in the name of Mirzapur is an insult to the rich culture of the city.

Amazon Prime Video’s popular show Mirzapur has landed in murky waters. The Supreme Court of India has now issued a notice to the makers and sought their response after a petition was filed against the crime drama alleging that the web series portrays the Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh in a negative light.
The petitioner, Sujeet Kumar Singh, a resident of the Mirzapur district in his plea to the Supreme Court demanded that a committee be set up to screen content that is directly released on the digital streaming platforms.

It has sought a direction to the Centre to set up a pre-screening committee for web series, films or other programs which are directly released on online platforms.

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice on plea of a Mirzapur resident complaining against the web series Mirzapur and Amazon Prime for maligning the image of his native place in Uttar Pradesh.

“Mirzapur has rich cultural value, but in 2018 Excel Entertainment has launched a web series named Mirzapur of 9 episodes in which they have shown Mirzapur a city of goons and adulteresses,” said the plea.
