Cooperate with authorities if culling required, Sabah pig farmers urged

KOTA KINABALU: Pig farmers in northern Pitas including Paitan and Sugud are urged to give full cooperation to authorities if livestock livestock culling is required. According to Pitas assemblyman Datuk Ruddy Awah, Sabah Veterinary Services Department (DVS), officials would be visiting more areas in the vicinity of the farm where the African Swine Fever virus was first detected. We need all farm owners to cooperate when asked to surrender livestock and to allow culling to be done to prevent the spread of ASF, he said. He assured that compensation would be given to those affected. This will take some time as there are many procedures involved, including getting an estimate of losses for those affected and to have the compensation amount discussed and approved in cabinet, Ruddy said.

African Swine Flu cause of Sabah s mysterious wild boar deaths, says Jeffrey Kitingan

KOTA KINABALU: The mysterious deaths of dozens of wild boar in Sabah s east coast is not due to African Swine Fever (ASF), says Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. The Deputy Chief Minister said initial tests results showed that ASF was not the cause for the deaths and more tests are under way. The Veterinary Department investigating team collected 11 samples – seven from bone marrow of the carcasses or bone remnants and another four from meat samples from sinalau bakas (barbequed wild boar) vendors. Initial results showed that (the samples) were all negative for ASF he said. Jeffrey said that the state veterinary department was preparing a preliminary report for Putrajaya and the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) – the World Organization for Animal Health – of their findings.
