Dogs slashed in Ranau and Kinarut | Daily Express Online - Sabah s Leading News Portal

Published on: Saturday, July 17, 2021 By: Dr Roslee bin Haji Abbas Text Size: HElping Animals Rescue Team (Heart) THE number of animal cruelty cases in Sabah are quite worrying, but it is due to public awareness of the need to address animal cruelty in the State. Torturing a defenceless animal is not accepted by society. A dog is known to be man’s best friend but these days people have become quite intolerant of this loyal creature. Cases of dogs being killed, attacked and hurt are rising in Sabah. This planet belongs to all creatures, not just man. If some people justify that these stray/homeless dogs bite and are a danger to the public, so should be killed, then by this logic, all humans should also be killed because in spite of having intelligence, man kills, rapes and robs his own fellow men!

According the World Organisation for Animal Health (OiE) website, Malaysia has confirmed outbreaks in Sabah’s northern Pitas and Kota Marudu, as well as neighbouring Beluran. The biggest outbreak was the widely reported case at Kampung Ompungoi in Pitas that involved 212 domesticated pigs which was detected on Feb 8. ADVERTISEMENT The notification also confirmed the detection of ASF in five wild boars at a forest reserve in the Sugut area of neighbouring Beluran that was initially reported to have no cases on Feb 8.

ASF linked to recent pig deaths in Malaysia

The Sabah Veterinary Services Department (DVS) has declared a potential outbreak of the African Swine Fever (ASF) in Pitas following the discovery of the virus among pigs in the district, according to Malaymail and The Straits Times. The outbreak would mark the first reported cases of the disease, which is fatal to pigs but harmless for humans, in Malaysia. On 23 February, Deputy Chief Minister Jeffrey Kitingan, who is also state Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, said pigs in the Pitas district would be culled under a state enactment, with more than 2,000 facing a culling to prevent further spread. “Initial tests showed that eight of the 13 samples collected from the pigs in Pitas showed positive results for ASF,” said Mr Kitingan, in a statement, adding that results of tests looking for the disease in DNA sequencing would be available in a day or two.
