Opinion | Learning to Be a Mother Can Take Generations — and Sometimes, Distance

Ms. Harris and Ms. Tarchak are staff editors in Opinion. “The human grand-maternal relationship is nearly unique in the natural world,” writes Abigail Tucker, a science writer, in a guest essay for Opinion. For new mothers in particular who are lucky enough to have their own mothers at hand, there are “tremendous benefits to our mental health and maternal behavior in ways that emerging science increasingly underscores.” We asked readers how their mothers and grandmothers shaped their maternal behavior and the lives of their children. In hundreds of submissions we read about late-night breaks for new parents, cultural traditions passed down through generations and the showering of unconditional love on grandchildren, even from those who may not have given the same to their own children.

Fear spills and contamination could lead to no return for Napier waterways

Napier people fear waterways in the city could be at a point of no return if nothing is done to stop their destruction. The Ahuriri Estuary, or Te-Whanganui-a-Orotū, lies on the edge of Napier around its seaside. Photo: RNZ / Tom Kitchin Investigations have found there is 400 times the safe guidelines for some nutrients in the water, potentially leading to algae bloom which could cause serious degradation. After dozens of spills in the water recently, including one of almost 1000 litres of hydrochloric acid, people are demanding change. The Ahuriri Estuary (Te-Whanganui-a-Orotū) sits on the edge of Napier and is the largest estuary between Wellington and Bay of Plenty.
