we re going to get? doesn t matter how hard the committee is working if the people they re subpoenaing do nothing. you should be harping on t steph, because that s the whole ball game, how will the subpoena recipients respond? because the trump administration officials used to view congressional subpoenas as party invitation that is they could just politely or not to politely decline so it raises a couple legal issues. one, will congress get serious this time using all of the tools in its toolbox to enforce these subpoenas? importantly they have a tool now that they didn t have in the trump administration under the tenure of bill barr as attorney general, they have criminal contempt because that takes the assistance of the department of justice. so i suspect you may see criminal contempt battles fought in court. second legal issue, will the courts have learned anything from letting the don mcgahn s of the world, for example, run out the clock by engaging in a frivolous two-year subpo
states courts and ask the courts to basically force the white house to comply with congress pre rogive under the speech and debate clause, recognized by the united states supreme court to actually investigate. i think one way or the other, one of these clashes between the white house and the constitution, this notion that there are no limits on the white house s scope of its authority, that will make its way to the united states supreme court, whether it s in the subpoena battle or some other place. we see it winding through other parts of the federal judicial process. we will see some word from the supreme court on this. i don t think it s going to be favorable for trump frankly. the judges will have to ultimate decide, that s what you re saying, kim wehle? yes. there s actually two cases this week. one on monday out of the southern district of new york, the court dismissed trump s attempt from the attorney general from getting his tax returns. yesterday or tuesday, the d.c.
man, i call him king. he said but i am not king, i am president. and i said, no, you re president for life and therefore you re king. he said, huh, huh. i like that. this president has a lifelong obsession with wealth and power and the people who wield both like he does now. the queen who talked about the lessons of world wars and nations working together for peace or strong men and dictators imposing their will on their own people? from the leader of the free world, the choice should be clear. while the president is on his statement visit to the u.k. the subpoena battle that he stirred up at home is raging. how is it going to end? that question for phil mud, laura coats and matthew rosenberg, next.

we will get former secretary julian castro s reaction to ben carson s surprising, to put it mildly, testimony today. and we ll get julian castro s reaction to the reported death of a 16-year-old boy who was being held in custody by the trump administration at the southern border. but first tonight, the subpoena battle continued today between the president and the house judiciary committee. committee chairman jerry nadler issued two more subpoenas at the end of the day to former trump white house staff, hope hix and annie donalson, annie donalson is a key player, former deputy white house counsel and chief of staff who white house counsel don mcgahn who this morning refused to show up for his hearing at the house judiciary committee. orders from the president claiming that the white house
