The municipal council of Mapusa town in North Goa has banned the sale of gobi manchurian at roadside stalls due to concerns about unhygienic conditions and the use of synthetic colours by street food vendors. The ban was initially restricted to the annual fair of Shree Bodgeshwar Temple but was later extended to all roadside stalls in the jurisdiction of the council. This is not the first time the dish has faced scrutiny, as in 2022, the state Food and Drugs Administration issued a circular to restrict the number of stalls selling gobi manchurian during a temple fair in South Goa. The FDA highlighted the use of a sub-standard sauce containing extracts of reetha , an Indian soapberry, which is used for washing clothes.
