plan, the box will be in place some time tomorrow. meanwhile on capitol hill yesterday congress called on bp and executives to detail the exact chain of events this led to last month s deadly explosion. in back-to-back hearings senators blasted executives of trying to shift the blame. bp as leaseholder and operator of the well hired transhich ocean to drill that hole. trans-ocean had the responsibility for drilling operations. liability and culpability and ultimate responsibility for the events that resulted in the incident are one thing. as the lease operator and the well owner, that falls on bp. in the wake of the massive spill, a new poll finds that a majority of americans still support offshore drilling. according to public policy polling, 55% are in favor of drilling and 31% are opposed. dan abrams, there is such economic hardship.
so what the heck happened out there? that s what we want to hear today when the executives finally spill their guts. they ll get a grilling from senators at the energy committee. that gets under way any moment. it s the first of two hearings for them today. we re talking about the big guns at bp, transocean and halliburton. each had a hand in the operations on the deep water horizon. now all in the deep water over the oil spill. cnn congressional correspondent brianna keilar is live on capitol hill. what will we hear from these witnesses? do we know. reporter: we ve gotten some of the testimony ahead of time, kyra. so we will hear from the expert panel, a professor who maybe can give us some expert opinion as sort of a third party and then we re going to be hearing from the former head of the minerals management service which, you know, is the organization in charge of regulating the government officials in charge of regulating this, but what s really interesting is the second pane
we are getting off of here werks are all dead. ed lavandera joins us live from new orleans. good morning, ed. reporter: good morning, ken. those hearings from washington have the potential of being rather intense today as the company officials from all of the major players in this oil rig disaster will be showing up. you have executives from trans ocean which owned the oil rig. you have b.p. which was in control of the drilling operations. you also have halliburton which really hasn t been talked about as much as the other two companies. halliburton was contracted by b.p. to put in the cement plug, which is what was supposed to go into these wells to really prevent the escape of natural gas from rising back up to the surface, which many believe so far, which is what triggered this massive explosion, deadly explosion as well. what you are probably going to see here today, john and kiran, is the beginning of that blame
